Kublai Khan's Navy

Kublai Khan's Navy

The Mongols' expeditions to Japan were made by Kublai Khan, the emperor of the Yuan Dynasty. Kubilay Khan's Navy is always at the forefront during the expeditions. This navy organized the 1274 expedition against Japan after capturing the Kingdom of Goryeo on the Korean Peninsula. With this expedition, the 1281 expedition was named Japan voyages.

Kublai Khan's Navy First Invasion Attempt

In 1268, Kublai wanted to attack Japan. But, it does not yet have the navy it desires. Kubilay does not want to set out with a small fleet and leave a shipwreck behind. He made his navy ready in 1274. It begins to sail with 300 large and 400 small ships. It occupies Hakata Bay on 19 November. A war begins. This war is called the Bun'ei Battle.

The war experienced allows the Mongols to advance. In this war, the Japanese fail to stop progress because they are inexperienced. The Japanese are forced to ask for support. But, when the first day of the war ends, a hurricane occurs. As a result of this hurricane, almost all ships in the Mongolian navy were submerged. Although there are many sunken ships, the few remaining small ships try to continue the war. These ships have managed to return to Korea.

Second Trial

In 1281, the Mongols attack with two separate forces, regrouping their forces. While the first of these forces consists of 900 ships, the second consists of 3500 ships. These two forces are planned to act together. Yet, the large fleet was left behind for various reasons. That's why the small fleet is defeated at Tsushima. The Fleet is forced to return after its defeat.

When the summer months are reached, these two fleets reunite. The fleet occupying many places along the coast is defeated again in the Battle of Koan. Taking advantage of this, the Japanese prepare for war. When the war ends there is a violent typhoon. This typhoon became legendary over time and took the name kamikaze. The typhoon, which continues for two days, causes major problems for Genghis Khan's Navy. The fact that they did not make enough preparations for the second campaign was also effective in the destruction of this navy by sinking.
